I see your client Accuri mentioned in the freep.com about venture capital making it's way to deserving companies - http://www.freep.com/article/20100906/BUSINESS06/9060384/1320/Firms-commit-50M-for-venture-capital-fund. Thank God good folks like Menlo and Accuri and others are hard at work in the Great Lake State.

Beautifully said.
Thanks for the distinction btw the champion and the non-job-loser.
I've seen projects like these fail far to often, but some orgs just don't nurture any champions.
Seems you are doing better!
Cheers,
Olaf

Writing about the greatest internship that a student from overseas can do is always a pleasure. I got the opportunity to be one of the IAESTE interns during the 2009/2010 session. Working all the times in pairs is the most awesome thing that can happen to an intern! I think by far the fastest way to learn to developed high quality software is paring. I arrived at home one and a half months ago and started to write my master thesis at the ETH Zürich. I realized quickly that switching from an extreme programming environment to a “common” environment is much harder than the opposite.

I worked with Gabriel over almost a year at Menlo as an intern. I'm back in Latvia now and looking for a job - of course, that ridiculous requirement to have experience is a fantastic stumbling block. I can only say good things about Menlo and the process in place there and for me personally it's difficult to work alone now since the only person I'm talking to is me. Working in pairs is a lot more fun and you get more out of it.

I think more than anything else the internship program at Menlo creates a group of people who, when they go out into the world cannot fathom why other people are not doing some of the things, if not all, that Menlo is. And because we see the glaring difference we try to incorporate whatever we can, wherever we can. I am currently working with Cisco, and despite the fact that the work profile isn't the same, I am still trying to incorporate as much of Menlo as I can.

It is always a pleasure to talk about Menlo. I arrived in Brazil 2 months ago from there and I already miss them. I used to say that it is the best place to learn I have ever worked on. You can see the communication flowing in that place: boards, your pair partner, sheets of paper, pencils, stickers, story cards, stand-up meetings... And it's such a democratic environment that nobody is allowed to decide anything by yourself. Always as a team. I simply adore that. I am coming back one day to talk about business with Mr. Rich. and to ask Carol how is the family going.

I had the joy of working at Menlo through IAESTE for 6 months way back in 2007. It was by far the most valuable work experience I have acquired so far. Not only did I learn a lot about writing good software, but also about working together in a pair, organizing work in stories and the benefits of being in constant communication with the whole team.
After graduating with a Masters in Computer Science at ETH Zürich in 2009 I have successfully brought in some of the agile techniques I learned at Menlo into my current work places. Both at LiberoVision, where I did my masters thesis, and at Palindrom where I am working now, we experimented with daily stand-up meetings for example.
I always look back with pleasure at the time I had at Menlo and I'm looking forward to visiting again someday.

Amen Rich. Often, we have a voice inside of us, telling us what we know to be true, and for reasons too numerous to mention, we stifle that voice. Congratulations for having the courage to listen. Its a position I hope to emulate.
