High-Tech Anthropology® Workshop (Private)

This workshop takes anthropology, "the science of humanity," and shows you how to apply its tools to the field of business and needs assessment. Originally developed to identify the goals of software and technology users and design solutions for them, Menlo’s High-Tech Anthropology® (HTA) approach is just as effective in finding opportunities to adjust a process that isn’t working or in discovering new business opportunities. Key elements include an in-depth examination of people and places, immersion in the area of interest, and the significance of observation. Our High-Tech Anthropologists® study end-users in their own environment and use workflows and mind-maps to capture and distill information to create designs focused on those end-users' goals.

In this two-day workshop, you will be immersed in the High-Tech Anthropology® process, learning how to think like your customers and users in order to design a joyful experience that will wow them. With a team of Menlo’s High-Tech Anthropologists®, you will gain hands-on experience with interviews, observations, writing personas and using them to prioritize users, as well as iterative design and evaluation of solutions.  In addition, we can also highlight specific alterations that can be made to this process for both in-person and remote settings.

There will be multiple breaks throughout each day, and opportunities for reflection on how these concepts can be deployed in your organization. This workshop is appropriate for team members at any level of your organization.

You will come away knowing how to:

  • Use interview and observation data to unearth the critical and often hidden goals of your users

  • Synthesize findings from the field through workflows and mind maps

  • Use persona mapping with business stakeholders to get consensus on project direction and goals

  • Craft multiple design options geared towards uncovering what would best meet users’ needs and elicit critical user feedback to assess design options

  • Utilize iterative design to create effective designs that delight users

We also offer an optional third day whose agenda would be customized with the client team, tailored to focus on applying the High-Tech Anthropology®️ concept(s) learned in days one and two to a client project. Areas of focus could include:
  • Conducting observations of end users
  • Synthesizing observational data
  • Writing personas
  • Creating a project problem statement
  • Creating contrasting design frameworks

This workshop is for 6+ participants, or less than 6 paying the cost equivalent of 6 participants. Multi-day workshops at Menlo include breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day each day. Dinner is not included; we are happy to help with making reservations for non-included meals.
